Here is my latest painting! I was sitting on the couch writing in my journal, when suddenly I had the urge to paint. I literally jumped off of the couch and grabbed a blank canvas from the closet. Pulled out some colors. I knew what I was going to paint.
I was asked to contribute an essay and original artwork for an upcoming book project called “Guam Through Our Eyes” and today I finally got to the artwork!
I adore red ginger (ginger of all kinds really!) and for me, primarily when I think of Guam, nature comes first. My heart is definitely in nature, and in this painting you’ll see the flowers, greenery, the ocean, and the sun, moon & wind all swept into one blended vision of love for nature.
This painting didn’t take too long to create, but a lot of energy went into it. It was pretty intense actually, but it came together so quickly! I think it really made a difference that I had a clear image in my mind of what it would ultimately resemble.
Below I offer a play-by-play from start to finish.
…
This morning as I was writing in my journal, I started doodling…and when under the right circumstances (no one bothering me!) my doodling has a ripple effect…Suddenly the whole page is filled with a detailed wonderland!
I really love writing in my journal, and today I remembered just how much I love to draw in my journal too! And what fun it is to come up with all kinds of fantastical aspects to add to this mysterious wonderland…a utopia of sorts. A luscious, magical sacred retreat is what I am dreaming of…
Drawing little worlds like these is so fun for me, because I get to recreate it as I would love to see it! Or at least one small part… And it also lets me be free enough creatively that when I am just relaxed and open, inspiration & ideas seem to flow in so easily.
Magic all around!
I have recently completed a mural at Synergy Studio here on Guam. In their cafe/lobby area, there is a square column in the middle of the room. They requested for a banyan tree, or better known here on Guam as the taotaomo’na tree, or nunu (ancestral spirit) tree.
The leaves and branches extend on to the ceiling (and don’t ask why I didn’t use scaffolding), making for a nice canopy in the room. It was hard to get the detail of the more stringy vines to show up in photos. Its better seen in person for the real effect.
I hope that the love and care that went into this piece permeates through the building, bringing smiles to guests’ faces. Clare Calvo, the owner was off-island and had no idea the mural was being done until she got back and saw it finished. She was totally shocked and loved the tree. And as I predicted, she was the first one to hug the tree.
These two paintings, I call them my Angels, have always been quite special to me. I painted them awhile back, but anywhere I put them on my walls, something didn’t quite fit. Its like they just did not feel like they were meant to be in my home. They had some other higher purpose to fullfill. So they wandered from wall to wall, in and out of my closet, where they sat for some time. When I was informed about the Guma Mami Creative Spirits art exhibit/silent auction to benefit persons with disabilities and mental illness, I was more than happy to donate some of my art. When I looked through what I had, and thought about doing a painting specifically for the show, the two Angels kept grabbing my attention. So I touched them up a bit, cleaned and cleared the energy flow, and took them to the Guma Mami office. I included descriptions of each painting, as I usually do with each Aura Art Creation. It felt good to send these two paintings to new homes where they may be appreciated more!
I wasn’t able to attend the exhibit, and was kind of disappointed about it…but it turned out that the Angels caught quite a bit of attention, and they each ended up selling for over $100 each! I am so happy that the event was a success, and that the Angels & I could participate. Maybe it worked out better that I wasn’t able to be there, it threw a bit of mystery into the mix!
The Souls of Humanity: Love, Peace & Joy
This painting is a poster version of a beautiful work of art done by a woman named Velva Lee. I came across this painting through my aunt, Anita Johnston, whose home Velva Lee stayed in for a short time. From what I hear, the original painting is life size, and has been shown in various places around the world. It is said to offer incredible healing to those who encounter its beauty. Also, when Velva Lee was just finished with the painting, she received a clear massage to put her hand on the “mother’s” heart. She was hesitant of course, as it was still wet! But she followed the urging and placed her hand on the heart and felt an unmistakable heartbeat.
This painting guides me when I am out of sorts, or feeling disconnected in any way, especially when relating to my children. She really has that nurturing mother aura, free of judgment, full of unconditional love. I hope you enjoy the love and beauty of this artwork as much as I do, so there you go, just wanted to share!
Ok, I know this painting doesn’t seem to say “mother” when you first look at it, but let me describe my experience. On this Mother’s Day morning, I decided that I was not going to clean today unless I felt inspired to do so (this hasn’t happened yet, its quarter to 3pm, haha!). When I made this declaration, I had the urge to paint. I discovered that most of my brushes are ready to retire, except the two “fan” style brushes that I have yet to use. I felt like I was picking up a forbidden tool or something, I’d put off using that brush for so long! I have no idea why.
I wanted something that felt like mother nature, like a protective canopy of coconut tree leaves on a bright sunshiny day at the beach. So of course, green “fans” started to appear on the paper, followed by yellow streaks of sunshine. In flowed some deep blue waters and flashes of red hibiscus tints, creating a soft tropical atmosphere. Ahh, it says relaxation to me, which is the perfect feeling for me to hold in my mind this Mother’s Day.
Happy Mother’s Day everyone!
